Going out with "pinky" again today

Going out with my Granddaughter Jazmin again today, not sure where yet but fishing from shore we can pretty much pick up and go "where-ever".  I have to cause I stopped a WW to pick up a few things and went by the fishing gear, at which time she informed me that she was to big for the Shakespear Barbie spin caster.

Ice fishin in August?

June 25, As I was on my way for my Saturday morning constitutional breakfast, something struck me. No, not another driver, or a bolt of lightning! We’re now officially into summer and as I reached for the blower switch to reduce the chill (I don't have AC and the window was up), we may be ice fishing in August!

White perch?

Heard today at work that Dodge Pond was a good place for white perch.  WIll have to check it out some time this year.  The guy said there is little fishing pressure there as well.

Out with the grandaughter

Jazmin asked if we could go fishing today.  Since it didn't look like it would rain and it wasn't too hot, what the heck.  Stopped and got some night crawlers at a gas station on the way to Pachaug Pond to let her drown them for a couple hours while I tried some other options.  I had her 'free line' (I think that's the term).  She came up 5 to 1 over me.  When she had hooked two and I had none, I decided to try the night crawlers too.  She had mono on a spin casting reel and I had "clear" blue flourescent braid (It was free so I figured I'd try it out) on a spinning reel with no leader.  I caught 1 and she caught 2 more.  Nothing huge, but she did much better with the mono.  A couple of pumpkin seeds, a couple of bluegills and a white perch, all on night crawlers.  We used up the dozen crawlers and went home so she could brag about how she out fished grandpa!

I would say if you're using "clear" blue flourescent braid, it's a good idea to use a mono or flouro leader!  Or don't take a 6 year old girl (that likes to wear pink) along with you!

OR it could be that she was casting shorter, and into the blue gill etc. water depth, and I was casting longer to the deeper "no fish at all" area, but I will continue to blame it on the braid!!  OR all the pink stuff!!

the bait rules are grey in the area of bluegill, etc

Discovered today that the bait rules are grey in the area of bluegill, etc.  According to the CT DEP Fisheries Angler's Guide:

BAIT: Any animal or vegetable, or their parts, living or dead, used with a hook for the purpose of attracting and catching fish. Any fish legally acquired, except largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, northern pike, trout, salmon, carp and goldfish may be used as bait.  (bluegill/sunfish are not listed as exceptions = legal bait? Yes, but....)

BAIT SPECIES:

The following species of fish, amphibians, aquatic insects and crustaceans may be taken by sport fishermen for personal use, but may only be sold if taken under an inland commercial bait license.

Bait species: Common shiner, golden shiner, fallfish, creek chub, spottail shiner, bridle shiner, blacknose dace, longnose dace, pearl dace, bluntnose minnow, fathead minnow, cutlips minnow, chub sucker, white sucker, killifish, mummichog, Atlantic & tidewater silverside, sand lance, frogs (except northern leopard frog), crayfish, perch bugs, hellgrammites and mayfly nymphs.(bluegill/sunfish are not listed as bait species = legal bait?)

Saturday June 4th, Pachaug Pond/River

Had breakfast with Jazmin, then went to Pachaug Pond without the yak (or the yaker, that would be Jazmin).  Went to the bottom of the dam where, supposedly pike hangout and wait for a meal to come over the dam.  Nothing AGAIN.  Walked up stream to a small area just east of the bridge that crosses the river on Rt 138.  Saw several bluegill/sunfish/pumpkinseeds, so .... used up some night crawlers catching some, after loosing a couple of lures in snags.  I may be able to go back and recover later, if someone else doesnt get 'em first.  Tried the bluegill bait scheme.  Used a large hook and hooked the 'gill gust behind the forward edge of the dorsal fin and hung it under a bobber.  After using the other rod to lose the lures I de-hooked the bluegill and let 'im go, since he seemed to be OK.  Went back to the dam area and again hooked a couple of sunfish, so i tried the same scheme, STILL nothing!  Not to give up yet.  Went to the upper side of the dam.  Tried a few lures, but didn't lose any (yaHooooo!)  Cast a night crawler out on a bobber and kept getting strikes but no hookups, untill I took my last night crawler and cast it out and left it while wasting time with other conventional lures.  The bobber bobbed, then went under and took off. Luckly I had the bail open or it probably would have take my rod for a swim!   The white catfish has amazing power for its size!

Memorial Day Monday (still catching up)

Went to breakfast and then headed for the top (north end) of Pachaug Pond.  Put the yak in and drifted the Pachaug River with the new medium heavy rod and the old medium rod.  Didn't catch anything, but did get a couple of strikes.  Looking for pike again.  Then paddled nearly the full length of Hopeville Pond. Didn't catch anything, not even a couple of strikes.  Used a variety of lures (spinners, crank baits, soft plastics, etc.) Made it all the way up to the site I caught my first and only pike to date. http://www.ctfishfinder.com/2nd-trip-to-hopeville-pond-101010-perfect-3722-trip.html  Nothing...... (trend here?)  Then across the pond into the cove just north of the big swimming beach.  I've been in the yak all day, and this guy on the shore hooks up with something and yells to me "You trying to catch one of these?"  He holds up a ~40" pike (he says..., but it looked like 40" to me too, unless he was a dwarf!)  Thats it! Time to go home and quit fishing for ever!!  He said he caught it on a bluegill that he caught, that's the second one I've heard of caught on live bluegill. One of those is listed on this site.  Back to work tomorrow!

Gardner Lake, May 30 (catching up)

Took Jazmin to the dam at Gardner Lake.  She couldn't get the timing right to watch both the bobber AND the other kids at the same time.  I caught a couple blue gills and sunfish.  She enjoyed the pink gilligan hat i got her to keep the sun off her head though.  Even though she has no clue who Gilligan is!!  Oh yeah, when we left we cleaned up after the family of picnicers that were there!  I hate that even more than not catching anything!
