SALTWATER AND THAMES RIVER
Bluefish and striped bass
Joe Balint of the Fish Connection said the upper reaches of the Thames River are full of bait, primarily adult and juvenile menhaden.
For this reason, anglers fishing from Norwich Harbor downriver to Montville have been catching some large “chopper blues” lately. The largest of which was a monster 40 class chopper landed over the weekend.
Many customers are talking about fall’s typical, “big-headed choppers” weighing in between 10 and 14 pounds from the river. They are not all monsters; many small fish averaging 2 pounds are in the mix.
The Race, Watch Hill Reef Complex and Plum Gut are full of fish this time of year. To get in on the fun take a ride on Mijoy, Hel-Cat or Sunbeam charter boats to catch some fall bluefish and striped bass.
The upper Thames River is starting to turn on with smaller 20-to-25-inch stripers. A few fish in the 20-pound range are showing up in the lower Thames.
