Bonito and Little Tunny or False Albacore are not the same fish although they are in the same family. I actively fly fish for both species starting in ealy August through the end of October sometimes into the second week of November.
Right now, sizeable schools of "albies" are feasting on butterfish which range in size from a quarter to a half dollar. The lure or fly must match the real thing very closely as thses fish have excellent eyesight. Fluocarbon leaders will give anglers and edge.
I will post this weekend a more detailed article that I wrote for Northeast Fly Fishing. It will provide more information.
Currently the Watch Hill Reef System, Fishers Island and the Race have actively feeding schools.
I expect to bne out there tomorrow!!!
