ICE FISHING REPORT NUMBER 3 2/11/2009

SPECIAL NOTE: Anglers are reminded that all sub-legal fish must be released immediately without avoidable injury to the waters from which they came. Before you release these fish, clip the fishing line as close to the mouth as possible. Avoid forcibly removing the hook as this will injure the fish. Regulations (including length limits) can be found in the 2009 Connecticut Angler’s Guide.

ICE FISHING REPORT TROUT - Good areas for trout include Mashapaug Lake, Crystal Lake (Ellington), Candlewood Lake (many 4-5 lb browns reported), Black Pond (Woodstock), West Hill Pond, Mt. Tom Pond, Mohawk Pond, East Twin Lake, Amos Lake and Colebrook Reservoir.

NORTHERN PIKE - Fishing for these monsters remains excellent, with many fish being caught. Best reports are from the Connecticut River Coves, Quaddick Reservoir, Pachaug Pond (9 lb, 32” pike among the catches), Bantam Lake, Mansfield Hollow Reservoir and Winchester Lake.

ATLANTIC SALMON are becoming a new favorite in eastern Connecticut, as catches continue to be reported from Mashapaug Lake and Crystal Lake.

PANFISH are being caught in good numbers, early mornings are most productive. Jigging with corn/grubs on your favorite lure and moving from place to place works well. Locations to try include Mashapaug Lake, Candlewood Lake, Wethersfield Cove, Quaddick Reservoir, Black Pond (Woodstock), Moodus Reservoir, Lake Waramaug and Park Pond.

CHAIN PICKEREL – Excellent fishing for this traditional winter favorite is reported from Crystal Lake, Bantam Lake, Wethersfield Cove, West Hill Pond (15 fish for one angler), Moodus Reservoir and Lake Waramaug.

SMALLMOUTH/LARGEMOUTH BASS - Reports for bass from Breakneck Pond, Moodus Reservoir (5 lb bass among the catches), Winchester Lake, Silver Lake, Park Pond, Lake Waramaug and Wethersfield Cove.
