What’s going on?

1. Buzzards Bay/Cape Cod Canal – In the Canal, they’ve been getting them around the tide change. There was a nice bluefish blitz in the middle of the Canal in the middle of the afternoon. Out in Buzzards, there are scattered bass. The more consistent action is on fluke and tautog, with black seabass action moderate. Seabass season closes September 12.

2. Islands – The Vineyard has some fish around State Beach, but one sharpie called the whole island “stupid slow” this week. A couple of funny fish have been landed off the Menemsha jetties, and Dick’s Tackle reported a bluefish blitz off Chappy the other day that was intense but short-lived. The Nantucket Shark Tournament wrapped up last weekend, with a 353-pound mako taking top honors. Closer to shore, there are blues aplenty but no albies yet.

3. Cape southside beaches and estuaries – The beach bite is starting to pick back up. I fished Cotuit town landing over the weekend, and there were fantastic amounts of bait breaking the surface. Scupping and crabbing is still strong in Bass River. Pogies all over Stage Harbor.

4. Nantucket Sound – Middle Ground gave up a few fluke. Bass scarce.

5. The Great Backside Beach – A few keeper bass came up from Newcomb Hollow, a couple of others down Nauset way, but overall, moderate from the beach. Around the Southway in Chatham had a decent push of bass coming in and the tuna bite remains strong offshore.

6. Cape Cod Bay – Barnstable Harbor kayak guide Scott Dietrich got into some bass this week with fish to 40-inches on top water. Good amounts of bait in the Harbor remain, even if the biggest of the bass have swum off. Up by the Race, the bite has been so-so. Ryan Loftus, age 9, took her first bass on her first trip – a 47-inch leviathan caught from charter boat Windswept out of Sesuit. Nice fish, kid.

Freshwater – Some decent largemouth action this week. The pickerel were active as well, leading to some bass gear breakoffs. As waters cool, the fresh water bite should continue to improve.

Seems like we’re kind of fishing between storms right now, between last week’s northeaster and the approaching hurricane, it might be a slow week here.
