White caps and three foot swells.

I went out Sunday of course on the kayak brought some bunker with me. There were three foot swells and it was crazy. I timed the waves and on the sixth wave I climbed on and took off. It was like I had a small motor I paddled like crazy to get over the surf and before I knew it I was a hundred yards out. I was supposed to meet up with a friend out there but I couldn't see him he was out there some where. I headed for the reef it was high tide and starting to go out. When I reached the reef it was the roughest I ever paddle through. I finally got through it and threw an anchor and baited up. I also had a popper on the other rod, so I was casting the popper while waiting for the bait to run. I would check the bait and every time it would be gone. I don't know if I was be eaten by Blues or it was just being ripped off by dragging the bottom?. While I was anchored I would be lifted five to six feet in the air it was awesome. After I had enough and decided to head back I had to cross the reef again this time it was worse so when I got to the really rough part it was trying to flip me. I would reach the top of the wave it was at lease five feet then go down and get hit broad side I was hoping not to flip over and loose my gear. Now the waves were holding me back I would paddle three or four times and bearly move and another wave would hit me. After what seemed an eternity I finally started making way. I focused on the beach about a quarter mile away where I put in and saw my friend Eric landing on the beach. When I made it back soaking wet and a little cold and grateful to be on land Eric said that They were catching Blues and Porgies at the light house. There will be other days, I was done I just wanted to load my truck and get home. It was a lot of fun but it felt dangerous I would have been a lot more confident if I wasn't alone, I always have a life jacket on so I wasn't worried about drowning but I was afraid that if I flipped I would loose everything. It's amazing how bad I want to go out on the kayak to fish and to be humbled enough to  just to make it back. It was another successful day on the water as far as I'm concerned. Thank you God.

Dog fish....

Went out today on my fishing kayak it was high tide sunny and a little windy. The breeze was nice but made choppy conditions. Spotted the birds diving, headed straight for them baited up and ten seconds later a throw back Fluke. This time I had a net and landed it and then released it. My next Fluke was a nice one netted it and it swallowed the hook I got out my handy pliers and broke the hook off in it. My bad, the Fluke must be at least 18" or its a throw back. This was a keeper, I'm thinking this is going to be a good day. I break out my stringer put the Fluke on it and throw it in the water to keep it fresh. Then the Sea Robin start eating my bait left and right, at first it was fun because the fight pretty good. Then after three or four of them I'm getting a little annoyed there making the strange sound they make and I'm slamming them back into the water. They make a barking sound hence the name dog fish. All to say that I caught a couple keepers and a half dozen throw backs and as many Sea robins. I'll be eating Fluke tonight.Cool

Got Fluke?

So it has been a hundered degrees all week to hot to go out. Yesterday it got down to ninety four and I was dying to go fishing so I did and the reef has been good for Fluke the last week prior. I kayaked out from Penfield beach and in the distance I could see the birds diving. I raced out to them which took about twenty minutes and broke out a Cast master and started chasing the birds. No hits for about two hours than I hooked a good size Fluke reeled him in and as soon as I tried to lift it on the kayak it got off the hook. It happened a couple more times a total of four times so the next time I go I will have a net!

On a positive note it was so beautiful watching the sun set, it felt like a tropical scene, there were green, blue, orange and pink colors and a band playing in the back ground. I may have gotten Fluked but it was worth it!

If you caught fish every time you went out it would get boring!

Plenty of birds and bait (Sand Eels) at the reef (Fairfield) but the fishing was lousy,I worked the birds fishing right outside of where they were diving. I saw what I think were Albies they were here then over there. I couldn't keep up with them on my kayak Wilderness 120 Tarpon and then I would get a hit and it would be a Sea Robin. A couple days ago it would have been a Fluke or a Blue.

The weather was hot and humid and the water was calm, with all the chasing I did I was burning up. The good thing is that I just jumped into the water for a quick cool down. Sunset was awesome. I can complain about how I didn't catch any keepers but instead I will be thankful that I will be at it again this week.

Work hard and play hard

We Kayaked out in windy conditions hoping to drift fish with bait(squid and shiner's) but it was so choppy and the current so strong that we weren't having any success. We threw out our anchor's and that slowed us down a lot then we started catching the Flounder's. It wasn't the best day of fishing but it was still better than not fishing at all.

If I had a camera it would have been great, because the wave's were pretty big Eric  would almost completely disappear and then he would appear again three or four feet in the air, it was awesome. We worked hard that day to catch fish, but we had a great time.

Pay to fish on the Sound

I've fished these waters for over thirty years (Long Island Sound) and all of a sudden we have to pay what is going on. Does anyone know anything about this? I feel victomized, don't we have a say in this.
