SPECIAL NOTE TO MARINE ANGLERS:
The recreational fishing season for scup (porgy) is closed from September 27 through May 23 except for the party and charter boat fishery, which remains open through October 15th. Please visit our web site www.ct.gov/dep/fishing for further information regarding the party and charter boat scup fishing seasons.
STRIPED BASS and BLUEFISH fishing is good to excellent in LIS! Striper and bluefish spots include the Watch Hill reefs, Napatree Point, Ram Island Reef in Fishers Island Sound, the Race, Sluiceway, Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut, outer Bartlett Reef, Hatchett Reef, lower Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Crane Reef, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, the reefs off Branford, New Haven Harbor, Charles Island to Milford Point, Bridgeport Harbor, Penfield Reef, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground,
and the reefs around the Norwalk Islands. Live lining bunker, scup, hickory shad, eels, snapper blues, and cut chunk baits on three way rigs work well on cow bass and jumbo bluefish. Also, trolling the tube and worm combination and parachute rigs on wire line are effective. Stripers in the 40 lbs. class and bluefish in the mid teens have been reported.
SNAPPER BLUEFISH fishing is prime time in the tidal creeks, rivers and coves.
SCUP fishing remains good to excellent on the local reefs but time is running out!
HICKORY SHAD fishing is good in the lower Niantic River and Connecticut River (DEP, Marine Headquarters fishing pier).
LITTLE TUNNY (false albacore) and ATLANTIC BONITO (green bonito) remain throughout LIS but can be tough to find at times. Popular spots include the Watch Hill area, south side of Fishers Island, Race Rock (the Race), Little Gull Island, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, Hatchett Reef, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground area and off the Norwalk Islands.
BLUE CRABBING is still alive and kicking but time is running out as water temperatures drop in shallow coastal waters.
Remember to check the 2009 Connecticut Angler’s Guide for tidal information (page 52) and pages 49-51 for saltwater trophy fish award information. For regulation updates, please check our website www.ct.gov/dep/fishing
