Waterford (WTNH) - All swimming areas along the Niantic River in Waterford were closed on Friday afternoon after a milky substance with a foul odor was found in the water.

The substance was found south of I-95N off Route 1. The Department of Environmental Protection said they are currently collecting samples of the substance.

Early indication is showing that it may be an algae bloom in a state of decomposition. This forces oxygen out of the water.

The substance may be killing fish. Blue crabs have been crawling out of the water and there are dead eels in the river.

The DEP does not anticipate the beaches will be open tomorrow morning.
