I saw the post about the Abu Garcia reels. I recently bought a Shimano spinning reel. It works great and I want to protect it. I use it mostly for saltwater. I rinse it off every time it is used. But, how often do you clean and oil it? I got a cleaning kit and they say you should take it apart to clean and oil it. How often would one do that? After 5 times? 10? Just curious.

Most say take the spool off and rinse with warm water after each trip, especially for salt water reels. Then take it apart after a major trip and at the beginning and end of each season. But I would think the manufacturer would have some guidance.

Good point, I will check with the manufacturer. Washing it with warm water after every trip, that's more than I had been doing. Maybe only with my good reels...
