Left the dock with my son on board about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. He is headed back to school Saturday so we wanted to get out before he left. Steared south to Little Gull and found birds all along the western side. A mix of blues and stripers werre feeding on nickle sized butterfish and even some peanut bunker in close to the rocks. The bluefish were all around 8 pounds and the stripers ranged in size freom 26 to 30 inches. We each caught numbers of both species on simple rootbeer estaz and white marabou wolly bugger style pattern tied on size 1/0 hook. Motored a 1/2 mile or so west to the other side of Great Gull and again found a mix of blues and bass. The bass were in closer to the rocks which required a long cast. The bluefish blitzed all along the shallow rip to the west of the island. Tried poppers and were treated to a carnival of fun watching bluefish and even some stripers explode when we let the popper set quiet between retrieves.
Headed in with a beautiful sunset over our shoulder.
